    The following information come from a talk given by Mr H.K. LAWNER / CRISTOPIA Energy Systems U.K. at the C.I.B.S.E. Thermal Storage Group Manufacturers’ Seminar, London, June 4th 1996. For further information please contact Mr H.K. LAWNER (Tel : (44) 181 3301403).

Harp Brewery - Guinness
(Dundalk - Ireland)
Sub-zero storage demonstration project

     At HARP brewery (1,000,000 hecto-litres of beer, 12 GWh) a STL - N10 - 200 (10,000 kWh at -10°C) was installed in 1994. The project was supported by the European Community (THERMIE project). As a condition of the THERMIE contract, the brewery was obliged to assess the impact of the installation and assess its performance in relation to stated objectives. We present here the monitored results extracted from the Consulting Engineer’s final report to THERMIE.

* Annual electrical consumption’s (kWh)

     The total site and the refrigeration consumptions have been reduced by 6 % and 16 % respectively (see Figure 2). In 1993/94 the refrigeration efficiency improved by 23.8 % compared to 1989/90. Indeed, the electrical refrigeration consumption per hecto-litre of beer decreases from 4.036 to 3.075 kWh/HL.

* Design solution

     The storage was installed in parallel with the high temperature (-8°C) which consists of 8 daily cycles. It has the potentiel to half the compressor demand. The low temperature circuit (-12°C) remained unchanged.

* Monitored results

* Maximum Demand (MD)

     The whole site maximum demand (see Figure 1) has been reduced by 30 % whilst at the same time the plant throughput increased by 9.6 % (from 1,008 to 1,106 M Hecto-litre).

* Engineering benefits

  • Site MD reduced by 1 MW

  • Electrical profile increased from 42 to 57%

  • Refrigeration efficiency and seasonal COP’s improved

  • Running costs reduced

  • Stable flow temperature

* Energy costs

     An annual saving of £ 113 326 has been realized. This figure is weighted to allow for increased throughput.

* Future installation

      The future application of this technology is potentially very attractive. As a result of the success at HARP, GUINNESS has taken delivery of a further -10°C CRISTOPIA STL at MACARDLE MOORE brewery to increase the production capacity.
