AsiaWorld-Expo – Hong Kong - CHINA

Saving on operating cost (electricity and water) by a sustainable development technology with CRISTOPIA STL

AsiaWorld-Expo, is at the center-stage of the exhibitions and events industry, in the fastest growing part of the world. It is uniquely located in a multi-modal transport hub, and will have over 77,000 square meters of rental space upon opening by the end of 2005. It will definitely reinforce Hong Kong 's position as Asia 's world city and trade fair capital. There are all together ten halls, including eight, totally self-supporting, interconnecting halls each of over 5,600 square meters divided by acoustic partitions.

AsiaWorld-Expo

With the first real Ice storage plant in Hong Kong, BYME Engineering (HK) Ltd, becomes the pioneer in Hong Kong.

BYME is wholly owned by Dragages et Travaux Publics (HK) Ltd., who is a major main contractor in Hong Kong with solid technical and financial backing from the parent company Bouygues Group of France. BYME specialized in Building Services design/build and full packages turnkey type projects with its own autonomous operation. Its services are offered to various sectors with a firm commitment to long-term development in the region.

Cooling Load Profile

The total load profile of AsiaWorld-Expo shows that a thermal energy storage is particularly well adapted to reduce the total chiller capacity and to shift the production of cooling energy from on-peak to off-peak electrical period.

During the design stage, the STL solution was investigated by the project manager and it appeared that this option could lead to a great savings on operating cost due to the 25 years of operation of the system. The thermal energy storage was definitely adopted beginning of 2004 for an installation during the second part of 2004.

Characteristics

The plant consists of 9 air cooled CIAT chillers of 1,100 kW. The thermal energy storage STL - AC.00 - 1404  is composed of 3 tanks of 468 m3 each. The STL tanks and the 9 chillers are installed in parallel without any plate heat exchanger. The glycol solution at +7°C produced by the cooling plant flows directly to the AHU.

The STL supplies 60 % of the peak cooling demand and shift 19 MWhelec from on-peak  to off-peak electrical period.

Technical Advantages

Smaller chiller capacity (only 40% of peak demand)
Reduced maintenance
Efficient and reliable system
Efficient energy management with BMS
