Click on the picture to have it bigger Minato Mirai 21 - MM 21 - is a new urban area in Yokohama. The Japanese engineers chose a DHC system - District Heating and Cooling - to provide heating and cooling to the whole district. The DHCs are the new Japanese policy for protecting the environment.
MM 21 DHC includes a Cristopia Energy Systems (STL) manufactured by Mitsubishi under Cristopia licence.
This STL - one of the biggest latent thermal energy storage in the world - is the basic component of the system allowing highly efficient energy management.

Cristopia Energy Systems and its partner Mitsubishi have demonstrated with this outstanding plant the large and numerous applications of the STL.

Technical Data

Cooling Energy Stored : 120 000 kWh
Storage Volume : 2200 m³
Storage Temperature : 0°C
Nodule Type : S - 00
Number of Tanks : 2 (vertical)
Tank Height : 28 m
Tank Diameter : 7.3 m
Tank Volume : 1100 m³

Characteristics

The thermal storage is a Cristopia STL-00-2200. The STL-00-2200 is composed of two 1100 m³ vertical tanks filled with S-00 nodules.
The nodules are filled with PCM (Phase Change Material) allowing thermal at 0°C.

120 000 kWh of cooling energy are stored daily in two 1100 m³ vertical tanks. The cooling energy is provided by two centrifugal chillers. The height of the tanks is equivalent to a 9 storey building.
