Bottling Plant Increases Output
"Marcadle Moore Brewery (Guinness)"
STL - N10 - 77

As a result of the success of the - 10°C eutectic thermal store installed in a large Dundalk lager brewery*, a further system has been supplied to another brewery in the same City.
The motivation for this installation was totally different to that of the previous one. This brewery acts largely as a bottling/canning plant for a range of lagers, beers and stoats; and the dominant cooling demand is for crash cooling the contents of arriving tankers.
Existing plant had a peak cooling capacity of approximately 1,200 kW at - 4°C and central plant was due for replacement. In addition, plant loads were planned to increase to approximately 2,100 kW. Since existing evaporators and heat rejection plant where originally installed with this expansion in mind, all that was required to replace the existing compressors and install additional compressors to meet the new demands.

However, this would have involved the cost of additional electrical supply & distribution, and would have increased the site's electrical maximum demand.
To avoid these consequences, a solution using a CRISTOPIA STL with a fusion temperature of - 10°C was installed. Existing compressors were replaced with 4 new compressors : two at 420 kW and two at 210 kW.
Additional cooling would be satisfied by drawing energy from 4,500 kW eutectic thermal store, which charges using cheap electricity over night.

The cost of the thermal store, in this instance, was greater than the cost of the compressors replaced. However, in most circumstances, additional evaporators heat rejection would be necessary, and the thermal storage solution would represent a capital saving.
Furthermore, running cost savings of over £26,000 per year are estimated due to the use of off peak electricity to charge the thermal store.
