Thanks to K.J. Engineering, Bangsar District Cooling Plant incorporates a Cristopia Thermal Energy Storage "STL-AC-1900"

This District Cooling System in Malaysia supplies chilled water to a district that comprises :

  • the Cygal Hotel and the Cygal Towers A & B
  • the Atlas Towers A to F
  • Menara Telekom and Wisma Telekom
  • Tenaga Head Quarter (TNB)

Objective
To take advantage of the lower electricity tariff during the night, the CRISTOPIA STL was used with the purpose of storing up thermal energy during the night for use during the day. The STL shaves off the peak demand during the day. It has enabled the client to minimise the installed cooling capacity and to increase the plant efficiency.

Description
The plant consists of 5 centrifugal chillers (1,000 RT each) working in conjunction with 5 cylindrical STL steel tanks of 380 m3 (F 3.8 m, 35 m long). Two conventional water chillers are used for the base load.

Each brine chiller operates with one STL and one heat exchanger to provide brine at 3.30C at the primary side of the heat exchanger. Each loop (5) operates independently of the others. The five heat exchangers are connected in parallel together with the water chillers to serve the load through a combination of distribution pumps, delivering chilled water at no more than 5°C.

The water chillers cater for the base loads that are on demand throughout the day. The chillers and STLs can be operated singularly and separately or in any combination to cater for the demands, and the decision for their operating status during the day is based on the objective of minimising the use of the chillers and depleting the energy stored.
The control ensures that the storage is not prematurely depleted before the end of the discharge period, and also that it is completely depleted by the end of the discharge period.

The Cristopia STL caters for ~ 35% of the total cooling requirement and allows a saving of 5 MW elect.

Plant Capacity
  • Max Demand 11,224 RT
  • Max Daily Energy Usage 127,257 RTh
  • Maximum STL Energy Storage 31,000 RTh
  • STL Storage Volume 1,900 m3
